Revolution in Retail #4
25 juni 2018Part 4: Scan to buy & Scan to pay
Ice House Netherlands has released the first step of its e-commerce concept Scan to buy, the first step being a mirror as a fitting room point of sale. In the mirror, the store’s lookbook is being presented.
The concept Fitting room point of sale with Scan to buy is a co-production of Ice House and its partners Convidad and Oled Mirror TV. The launch in Amersfoort is a co-operation with Amsterdam vintage brand King Louie, a shop in shop at the Keizerin in Amersfoort city centre, and with men’s fashion store Gentlemen’s place in Amsterdam Zuidas.

Scan to buy is a direct link between the item on screen, in an ad or in a videoclip, and that same item in the webshop. Up till now, such a link did not exist. The accepted concept was and still is, that the customer should remember the item in an ad and translate it from a certain setting without true colours, into an item in a webshop. Often, a correlation cannot be made, not even after spending hours of searching. This problem has now been solved. With Scan to buy items are interconnected with the help of modern mobile devices, by scanning the QR code either simply with your camera of with a QR code scanner. This solution is the missing sales and marketing tool in e-commerce.
New relevance for shopping concepts
Scan to buy is the first step in a framework platform for e-commerce retail, which is presently being developed by Ice House Netherlands. Online to offline retail and e-commerce concepts bring new solutions in customer engagement. With digital screens and smart retail mirrors it will become possible to give a new meaning to shopping concepts and to upselling and cross selling. This way, a fitting room can become a point of sale, where clothes can be tried on virtually. A screen in the store makes the lookbook visible, while items can be bought with an augmented reality app (adding images to the computer screen) in the webshop and have them home delivered. A pop up shop with digital signage could help set up shop in a foreign country, at relative efficient cost.
Payments Scan to buy
Scan to buy will be followed up by Scan to pay: the QR code for price tags and invoices. While Scan to buy links between ad and webshop to order directly, Scan to pay will make paying easier for consumers and businesses alike. All means of payment will be connected with Scan to pay, such as iDEAL, Alipay, PayPal, creditcards and online banking. Paying in installments will also become possible, while stating relevant data for the supplier’s admin.

Part 3: Platform economy in practice. The large players in the current platform economy are without doubt Alibaba and Amazon. How does this affect you as customer or retailer? Should we consider this a threat or an example of interesting innovation?
